Columnist Bob Lutz wrote an excellent column today on the state high school basketball tournament.
He echoed a lot of my thoughts coming out of state basketball. The first is, we do not need any more state tournaments. Not everyone needs to win. Really. That’s reality. He said combine 6A with the top half of 5A, then smallest half of 5A with the top half of 4A.
I say, combine 6A and 5A for a 48-team class.
Bob also wrote about the venues for state basketball. If we can’t have them all at one place — and I don’t know how it’s possible, unless we split up boys and girls and have girls one week, boys the next — can we have better venues?
Salina and Topeka are awful. The atmosphere stinks because they’re so large. At Emporia’s White auditorium, you know it’s going to be loud even if the student sections don’t show up (Hello! Heights? BV Northwest? Olathe South? Where are your students? Aren’t you excited about winning a state title? My goodness, it was horrible.)
So what’s your take on the column? What are your fixes for state basketball? Or do you think it doesn’t need to be fixed?
