Varsity Kansas

Soccer notes (Oct. 21)

Am I the only one surprised that Dodge City beat Maize on Thursday? I guess I shouldn’t be surprised because Dodge is a good team. But with all the talent Maize has, it was easy to believe it would walk into the state tournament undefeated.

Even with the loss, I think Maize will reach the state final. The loss will make them hungrier. But it could work in favor of their opponents as well. I think the loss will give confidence to other teams that could see Maize in the regionals.

Speaking of 6A teams, what do you think about Southeast or East? I think that Southeast has the better chance of the two because it has a very tough defense. East will also have a chance, but will depend more on its offense.

In Class 5A, Newton and Hutchinson will be tough to beat. Both teams played Maize tough. The key, for both teams, will be finding consistent scoring.

In Class 4-1A, Rose Hill has a really good chance of advancing to the title game. The Rockets are very active on defense and the Rockets make the most of their scoring chances. Trinity has a shot at advancing to the state tournament, but I’m not sure that it has the offense to make a run deep into the playoffs.

Regional pairings come out Saturday, with regional play beginning Monday.
