Fournier saves best for last in 6A

MAIZE — During a mid-match dispute with her opponent in the Class 6A tennis championship, Blue Valley North senior Haley Fournier told an official, "This is my last match ever, I want to enjoy it."

The tension with Shawnee Mission East sophomore Mimi Fotopolous made enjoyment during the match almost impossible, but Fournier couldn't argue with the result. She wept tears of joy after winning 6-3, 6-2, her first victory over Fotopolous in nine tries.

"I just really wanted it," Fournier said. "I got to go against (Fotopolous). She hasn't lost yet and she was the favorite. I was excited and I played really well."

Fournier's win helped BV North capture the team title by eight points over SM East. SM East's Nikki Reber and Molly Cooper took the doubles crown.

Fournier tracked down a line judge after Fotopolous called what Fournier later described as "a really good shot" out of bounds in the first set. The drama was further built when the familiar opponents couldn't agree on the correct score, ruled by the judge to be 15-15.

Fournier shook that off to win the game and take a 5-2 lead, finishing the first set off two games later. She won the second set even more easily despite looking rattled at times over close calls on the lines.

"It wasn't easy to let it go," Fournier said. "I'm just glad I was able to do it."

Northwest freshman Lindy Wilkerson was the top area finisher, winding up sixth. No Wichita-area doubles team finished higher than ninth. Goddard was tied for third in the team standings, though its 15 points were 35 behind SM East. Maize and Northwest finished in a tie for seventh with 11 points.
