Hesston tandem takes 4A doubles title

TOPEKA — Hesston notched one Class 4A championship and came close to another in Saturday's state girls tennis meet at the Kossover Tennis Center in Topeka.

The Swathers' team of senior Stephanie Shogren and junior Madelyn Weaver won the doubles title with a 7-5, 6-2 win over Wellington juniors Lexis Hibbs and Kaitlyn Buck in the championship match.

Hesston also made a strong run at the team title, falling short by a 41-39 margin to Independence.

"We had a chance coming into today and lost a couple of tight matches and that's the way it is,'' Hesston coach Mark Dahlsten said. "I'm really proud of our kids. They compete so hard and we've had a great season and second in the state's nothing to quibble about.''

Dahlsten praised Shogren and Weaver for their doubles performance.

"I'm proud of those two girls,'' he said. "This is their third year playing together and their third year in the state tournament.

"They really worked on their games in the offseason and it was nice to see that come to fruition.''

Shogren and Weaver finished sixth in the 2008 state meet.

Wellington came up just short in its bid for a team trophy, with the Crusaders finishing fourth, two points behind third-place Hayden.

"I'm real pleased,'' Wellington coach Brian Aufdengarten said. "This is the first time ever we've gotten our whole team in and every one of our girls produced some team points.''

Colby junior Caitlyn Wark captured the state singles championship, beating Hayden junior Lexi Hertling in the championship match, 6-3, 7-5.

Independence captured the state team championship with its depth, placing three-four in doubles and third in singles.
