Getting a night's rest did wonders for the Northwest offense Saturday morning.
The Grizzlies (2-2, 2-2), who had a 9-0 lead over West when conditions forced a suspension Friday night, scored eight touchdowns and piled up 370 yards of offense Saturday to rout the Pioneers 62-7 at Carpenter Stadium.
Senior running back Demarcus Robinson led the charge, rushing for 161 of his 219 yards Saturday, including scoring on runs of 27 and 5 yards. Sophomore A.J. Thurman scored on runs of 9, 14 and 1 yard, and senior Andrew Etheridge scored from 3 yards out to go with Friday night's 71-yard touchdown run.
"I think we just played well," Northwest coach Weston Schartz said.
In all, nine Grizzlies carried the ball, including three sophomores (Thurman, fullback Noah Parsons and quarterback Jordan Wiedemann) and a freshman (fullback Alex Lee).
Robinson said it was beneficial to get the underclassmen some game action.
"We got a lot of young guys in there, and they got some learning experience," he said.
However, he echoed his coach's thoughts that the Grizzlies have room for improvement.
"We had a good game, but we've still got a lot to learn as a whole team," Robinson said.
West coach Heath Henderson said his players might have had trouble adjusting to a day game.
"That change in the tempo and the change in the day just didn't work out with our kids transitioning to the morning," he said.
Henderson said that things started to fall apart for his team with a little more than six minutes to play in the first half when Northwest recovered a fumble at the West 31. The Grizzlies scored on the next play on a 31-yard pass from Ethan Chadick to Markel Oliver. The touchdown came with exactly six minutes left in the first half and gave Northwest a 29-0 lead.
"We throw an incomplete pass, our kid drops it, and you could just see the tone of the kids change right there, and that's bad when you're just starting," Henderson said. "Everything just avalanched from right there."
