I was out at Valley Center tonight for volleyball, and I saw some outstanding talent.
Did you see a game? Hear a score? Feel free to post.
Valley Center not only opened with pre-game music from my day — Push It by Salt-n-Pepa! — but I saw some great players. Valley Center has a young team, but sophomore setter Emily Otte (who I talked to only after urging her coach and father that I really needed to talk to the setter who sets so many good hitters) handles the hitters and passes well. The hitters are excellent — Cassy Mayber is one of the few seniors on the team, and she does well in the middle. Then there are freshman Meagan Williams and Meghan Dugan and sophomore Ashlyn Driskill. Driskill had 21 kills on the night, Dugan had 16, Williams had six, Mayber had six.

Valley Center swept Maize and Derby.
Maize is young and inexperienced — hitter Lindsey Jones hurt an ankle in the Saturday tourney at Hutchinson — but I was impressed with sophomore McKenzie Hartzog, who had 21 kills on the night.
Maize is now coached by Betsy Martling — former coach Teri Larson is over at Maize South and she coached Martling. I mentioned to Martling that I had covered her and asked what year she had graduated. She said, oh, a long time ago. 2004. I about died with silent laughter. She’s so young and I’m so old.
Derby struggled Tuesday, but this is an inexperienced team. Aryal Eden is a tough player — she had 7 kills and two stuff blocks — and Tori Provencio is a nice libero.
In another big night, this at Clearwater, Clearwater beat Circle and so did Andale, while Andale beat Clearwater. All three matches went to three games.
I’m a little surprised by this because Circle has so much returning talent. Clearwater was supposed to be down, but when you have a tough program, you can reload instead of rebuild.
Any other surprises or anything impress you tonight?
