Wingnuts’ Ziegler hits 30th homer in win over Saltdogs

C.J. Ziegler hit his league-leading 30th home run, one of three homers for the Wingnuts in an 8-4 win over the Saltdogs on Tuesday night in Lincoln, Neb.

Ziegler’s homer started a three-run fifth inning that gave the Wingnuts a 6-0 lead. He broke the league’s single-season home run record earlier this month. He also leads the league with 98 RBIs.

Wichita’s scoring began with Brent Clevlen’s leadoff homer in the second. Ryan Khoury’s two-run single later in the inning stretched the margin to 3-0.

Adter Ziegler’s one-out homer in the fifth, Clevlen reached on an error, Abel Nieves walked and both scored on a Cole Armstrong single.

Jake Kahaulelio homered in the sixth, and Jared McDonald drove in Wichita’s final run with an eighth-inning double.

Starting pitcher Anthony Capra (7-2) struck out 11 batters in six innings.

The teams play the second of a four-game series Wednesday at 11 a.m.
