Wichita Wingnuts

Wingnuts can't erase early deficit

St. Paul rocked the Wingnuts early, scoring five runs in the first inning and beating Wichita 6-3 on Tuesday night in St. Paul, Minn., in the opening game of the second half of the season in the American Association.

All five first-inning runs against Luke Massetti came with two outs. Jason Cooper's two-run homer started the scoring, and Josh Petersen's two-run double concluded it.

Massetti gave up six hits in the first inning, but followed with six shutout innings in which he allowed four hits.

Wichita's offense finally scored in the fifth, when Josh Horn hit a two-out double and came home on Ryan Patterson's single. In the eighth, Mario Delgao and Steve Pearson knocked in runs, but it wasn't enough to overcome the early deficit.
