Bruce Allen, son of late Redskins Hall of Fame coach George Allen, is the team's new general manager. He becomes the first person hired by owner Dan Snyder to hold the GM title , after a decade of various front office arrangements that usually centered around Snyder and good friend Vinny Cerrato. Price Chopper supermarket and Kraft Foods have signed on to sponsor Kansas Speedway's fall NASCAR Sprint Cup race for the second straight year. * Danica Patrick will ease her way into NASCAR by skipping the Nationwide Series opener at Daytona International Speedway in favor of a less-stressful debut one week later at California. The IndyCar star is still working on piecing together a 13-race schedule for JR Motorsports in NASCAR's second-tier series, but announced Thursday she's marked the Feb. 20 race at Auto Club Speedway for her debut. Although Patrick will make her stock-car debut in the Feb. 6 ARCA opener at Daytona, she will not attempt the Nationwide race. The Nittany Lions (37-0) overcome a sluggish start and dropped only their sixth set of the season before extending their record winning streak to 101 matches. Golf

Even as he held firm that golf would survive no matter how long Tiger Woods stayed away, PGA Tour commissioner Tim Finchem said the sex scandal of golf's No. 1 player was the biggest "curveball" he's ever faced. Finchem tried Thursday to dispel a "gloom and doom" outlook for golf after the game's biggest star announced an indefinite leave to sort out his personal life. He predicted a successful season in 2010. "If Tiger is out for a couple of months or eight months or a year, we're going to have a successful year," Finchem said. "It won't be at the same level without our No. 1 player, there's no question about that. No sport would be at the same level without its No. 1 player."

Baseball

The Dodgers have reached preliminary agreement with free agent infielder Jamey Carroll on a $3.85 million, two-year contract. Carroll played the last two seasons in Cleveland.
