No. 1 Carroll uses defense to power way into playoffs
Mercifully, the Bishop Carroll Traveling Road Show — Maize version — has come to an end.
The Eagles capped off a two-week dismantling of Maize’s two high schools – Maize and Maize South – with a 37-0, defense-led win at Maize South on Friday night in Class 5A-District 7 play.
The Eagles beat Maize 69-7 last Friday. Carroll (8-0, 2-0 district) clinched a spot in the state playoffs and hosts Valley Center next Friday to close out district play.
Carroll’s vaunted defense gave up 30 yards of total offense to the Mavericks, and sacked Maize South quarterback Korie Frausto 12 times.
“That’s that Gang Green defense, that mentality that everybody is out there running, going hard,” said Carroll defensive end Chris Dugan, who led his team with 11 tackles. “We were sharp all week getting ready for this game, had some good practices and were ready to go.”
On a night when Maize South had to bring in extra bleachers on the visitor’s side to accommodate the overflow of Carroll fans, the Mavericks did little to slow down the Eagles’ march toward a district title, but played the state’s No. 1 overall team closer than any team since the Eagles slammed Northwest 43-14 in the season opener.
“Give credit to Maize South’s defense, it wasn’t a case of us making mistakes or anything like that, they played us tough,” Carroll coach Alan Schuckman said. “If our guys are disappointed, that’s because they have a very high standard.”
Carroll started off slowly, punting on its first drive and only getting a 32-yard field goal from Taylor White on its second for a 3-0 lead.
With the play of the Eagles’ defense, the offense could take its time.
“They’re so good ... it’s hard to get anything going against them,” Frausto said. “They wear you down.”
Carroll did its damage on the ground in the first half – Kansas State commit Denzel Goolsby scored touchdowns on runs of 23 and 16 yards, then quarterback Colton Howell capped off the first-half scoring with a 12-yard touchdown run for a 24-0 lead at the break.
“I don’t think our offense played very well, I think we need to get back and have a really great week of practice and definitely work on some things,” Goolsby said. “Scoreboard says we did well, but I think we all know that’s not the case.”
Carroll kept pouring it on in the second half. Goolsby opened up the scoring with a 10-yard touchdown run, then Howell found Ty Seyfert for a 32-yard touchdown pass on fourth-and-12, giving the Eagles a 37-0 lead.
“You can try to slow down Goolsby, but that’s not the only way that Carroll can beat you,” Maize South defensive tackle Anthony Johnson said. “They’ve got a lot of weapons, they’ve got a lot of talented players.”
Maize South (6-2, 1-1) hosts Maize next Friday — the first football meeting between the two schools — with a state playoff berth on the line.
“We’ve got to shake this off quick,” Johnson said. “Tomorrow morning, all the focus is on Maize.”
