Buffaloes gut out victory

The ups-and-downs continued Tuesday night for Southeast's boys.

Fortunately for the Golden Buffaloes, their bouts with inconsistency against South were brief, resulting in a 56-43 victory against the Titans.

"We started slow," Southeast coach Carl Taylor said, "but we got a total team effort tonight. We're not there yet as a team, but we earned this victory tonight."

No one individual shined for Southeast, but plenty of players made their mark. Gary Thurman hit all but one of his shots and scored 10 of his team-high 14 points in the first half, which ended with Southeast ahead by 11.

Younger brother Gavin Thurman — a non-factor in the first half — helped carry the load in the second half, scoring 10 points and grabbing all but one of his team-high six rebounds.

Kaheem Ransom finished with seven points and three assists, including a three-pointer at the first-quarter buzzer that gave the Golden Buffaloes their first lead at 13-11, providing them a spark after a miserable quarter in which Southeast didn't score for the game's first 4 minutes, 17 seconds, and had to wait another 1:09 for its first field goal.

On the other side, South played well enough in stretches to win. The Titans won the battle on the glass 34-25 while getting a game-high 17 points from Jaylyn Bradley. But the Titans were 5 of 20 from the free-throw line, while missing the front end of two one-and-ones.

Still, it was a seven-point game early in the fourth quarter before Gavin Thurman scored off an offensive rebound to start a personal 6-0 run. South would trail by double digits the rest of the way.

"We're making progress and if we continue to keep the same attitude, we'll make more progress," South coach Steve Lilly said.
