Team effort lifts Heights to win over Crusaders

Friday's game against Kapaun Mount Carmel wasn't the first time this season Heights has gone on the road and taken the opposition's best shot.

And as long as Heights continues to get outstanding play from Perry Ellis and timely contributions from those around him, the Falcons might survive most, if not all, of these tight City League affairs.

Ellis had 29 points and 17 rebounds, while teammate Terrence Moore scored 11 of his 20 in the third quarter as the Falcons held on for a 65-57 victory against the Crusaders.

"We know we're going to have close games and we're prepared for it," Falcons coach Joe Auer said about his defending Class 6A champs, whose margin of victory Friday was its largest in three games this season. "We have a lot of faith and confidence in our kids."

Ellis, a 6-foot-8 sophomore forward, scored two points in the first quarter as Kapaun's 2-3 zone swarmed him with two and three defenders at every opportunity.

Ellis began heating up in the second quarter, scoring nine points to give Heights a 24-20 halftime lead.

That lead grew to double digits in the third quarter as Moore and Ellis combined to score all of Heights' 18 points. But Kapaun came out blazing in the fourth quarter, hitting its first four shots, three of them three-pointers to get within five at 47-42.

Point guard E.J. Dobbins, who finished with 12 points, then provided a huge sequence for Heights, hitting one of two free throws and a three-pointer to bump the lead back to nine.

"It's not just the Perry Ellis Show," Kapaun coach Bernie Pearson said. "They have athletes all over the place."

Later in the quarter Kapaun used a 7-2 run and some ill-advised Heights shots to get within seven. Michael Martin lined up for a three from the corner with 50 seconds to go that could have made things interesting, but he missed and Ellis hit 3 of 4 free throws to seal the game.

"These first three games have all been tough," Ellis said.
