Newton overcomes two-goal deficit, tops KMC

NEWTON — The Newton boys soccer team survived a slow start, defeating Kapaun Mount Carmel 3-2 in overtime in a Class 5A regional final.

Felipe Carvalho scored with 18.5 seconds left in overtime by racing past Kapaun defenders along the right side and scoring the winning goal.

Newton (16-2) advances to the 5A quarterfinals on Tuesday.

"That was the best goal I've ever scored," Carvalho said. "We had a big battle, we have been having a great season so far and we couldn't lose now."

Kapaun (10-8) made it tough by controlling the first half. The Crusaders used seven players defensively and it was clear they were not letting Newton get behind their back line.

Kapaun took advantage of a couple of breaks early.

Drue Benning scored first after angling a kick off the post and into the net with 17:24 left in the first half.

After a hand ball in the box, Kapaun's Tyler Flores took the penalty kick with 9:13 left to give the Crusaders a 2-0 lead heading into halftime.

"We came out strong in the first half, came out pretty fresh," Kapaun coach Alan Shepherd said. "I wouldn't say we took it to them, but we took our chances. We were fortunate to finish a couple of those chances and that was the difference in the first half."

After the frustrating first half, Newton came out looking much more like the No. 1 seed.

"I told them at halftime to relax and it would come to us and if we get that first goal, things will happen from there," Newton coach Scott Jantzi said.

Newton created some scoring opportunities and after missing three shots on goal, Newton got on the board.

Missael Reyes sent a corner kick to the middle and Ben Kreider scored on the header to pull Newton within 2-1 with 28:31 left in the second half.

Kreider scored again just 1:05 later after he deflected a throw-in by Tanner Gatz to tie the score 2-2.

"They came out strong in the first part of the second half and put us on our heels and scored a couple goals," Shepherd said. "We just didn't do a good job of marking up on those two restarts."

Neither team got a good look at a goal for the rest of regulation, or the first 9:41 of overtime until Carvalho broke away to finish off the comeback.

"Coming back from two down against Kapaun shows that we've got some guts," Jantzi said. "It's nice to be on this end of the result."
