Wichita Trinity slips by Mulvane

MULVANE — Wichita Trinity kept its run toward the Class 4A playoffs alive by defeating Mulvane 28-26 Friday night in a 4A-District 12 game.

Trailing 28-20 with 40 seconds remaining, Mulvane quarterback Gus Strunk found Jordan Springer for his second touchdown to give Mulvane a chance to tie.

Strunk threw incomplete on the two-point conversion and Trinity held on.

"We are alive and we have a lot of work to do for Andover Central, but we think we are a formidable opponent and we proved that tonight," Trinity coach Mike Kriwiel said.

Mulvane (4-4, 0-2) is eliminated from the playoffs, while Trinity (5-3, 1-1) can now clinch a playoff spot with a win at Andover Central next Thursday.

Trinity was led by Morgan Burns' 213 yards rushing and three touchdowns.

Burns scored on touchdowns of 65, 40 and 15 yards to carry the offense.

"Morgan is a difference maker. Every time he touches the ball he is capable of scoring," Kriwiel said.

Five turnovers hurt Mulvane. Two interceptions and three lost fumbles stopped what otherwise was a very productive night.

Mulvane moved the ball, gaining 21 first downs and producing 397 total yards.

"That's something we've been very good at is protecting the ball," Mulvane coach Dave Fennewald said. "When you have five turnovers in a district game, in a tight ball game, that really hurts."

Trinity intercepted the opening pass by Strunk and Burns went on his first touchdown run to put Trinity up early.

Mulvane answered with touchdowns on consecutive drives, capped by Dylan Hagerman's 31-yard touchdown run and led 14-7 after the first quarter.

Burns again answered with his second long touchdown run to tie the game late in the second quarter.

Trailing 21-20 in the fourth, Mulvane was stopped on fourth and 1 at the 50-yard line, the second time Trinity came up with a stop on fourth and short.

"It's just one of those things, there were other plays that were the difference, it wasn't just the last play," Fennewald said.
