Redington, Mulvane rally to victory

MULVANE — Mulvane coach Dave Fennewald has eight principles by which he runs his football program.

Trailing Maize South 13-7 at halftime of Tuesday night's Class 4A playoff opener, he called upon his team to look inward. To call upon those principles in their greatest time of need.

"We knew at some point we'd face some adversity," Fennewald said. "And when we did, we knew we'd have those eight things to fall back on. Family, discipline, trust, commitment, pride, toughness, effort."

All those things, definitely. And Ty Redington.

Mulvane's junior quarterback picked apart the Mavericks in the second half on the way to a 43-13 victory, throwing for 181 yards and three touchdowns and rushing for 75 yards and a touchdown. The Wildcats outscored Maize South 29-0 in the third quarter.

The Wildcats will face Topeka Hayden in their second-round matchup Saturday in Topeka.

"We're pretty explosive on offense," Redington said. "And everything depends on the offensive line and the wide receivers. I don't always throw great passes or make perfect reads ... they came through for us."

Mulvane (8-2) needed two plays to go up 14-13 in the second half — a 40-yard run by Redington followed by a 25-yard touchdown pass to Todd Parton. The Wildcats' defense stood pat the rest of the way, not giving up a point in the second half behind defensive coordinator Scott Swaney.

"We felt like (Maize South) got lucky on the plays they scored on in the first half," Mulvane linebacker Trevor Shelton said. "Coach Swaney had a great plan and we stuck to it."

Maize South, led by Jesse Rogers' 122 rushing yards, had 13 penalties for 150 yards.
