Carroll wraps up baseball title

Bishop Carroll needed to win both games of its doubleheader Tuesday against City League-leading East to clinch its second consecutive league baseball title.

The stage was set between the two best teams of the regular season, but Carroll put together two of its best games the year. The Eagles swept East 9-0 and 14-4.

"This puts us in position to host as a one or two seed (in a Class 5A regional)," Carroll coach Charlie Ebright said. "It gives us momentum — something we've been lacking all year. We've had an up-and-down season and had our backs against the wall as far as winning the City League back-to-back. The kids really responded."

Carroll (14-6, 14-2) got a peak performance by pitcher Seth Holman, who threw a shutout against the Aces (15-5, 13-3). He surrendered three hits and had eight strikeouts, saving his best stuff for the most important games of the season.

"We had to come out and take the first game and make a statement," Holman said. "We really wanted to be able to host a regional. We are not done yet."

Holman's performance was almost overshadowed by shortstop Denton Howell, who dazzled defensively making multiple throws on the run and in other awkward positions, and who drove in five runs with two hits. Howell's two-out, three-run double in the bottom of the fourth gave the Eagles a 5-0 lead

"These wins were really important," Howell said. "We just ... made the defensive plays that we needed to make. At the plate I was just seeing the ball well, and hitting it well for our team."

In Game 2, it was Evan Koehler with the hot bat. He went 3 for 3 with four RBIs and two runs. Howell picked up his sixth RBI of the night, a bases-loaded single that drove in Carroll's 14th and ended the game in a run rule.

"Bishop Carroll kicked our butts both games," East coach Ryan Bensch said. "As bad as it tastes in the mouth right now to get kicked in the teeth, I'm glad it happened now. We still play in the regional. I just hope starting with practice tomorrow we build on what happened tonight and know that any given night it can happen, regardless if you are 15-3."
