It seemed fitting that Hutchinson would win its Titan Classic soccer bracket on a shot that nobody saw coming.

The Salthawks seemed to surprise everybody but themselves, and Cody Burgey's high-arcing kick that bent at the last moment was the only fitting way to end it.

Liberal's goalie was helpless to stop it, and 2 1/2 minutes into the second overtime Hutchinson won 4-3.

"For me to get that goal was really lucky," Burgey said. "It came right to me, and I just sent it up. I don't want to put it on me, because the win was possible because of the whole team."

Hutchinson upset Maize 3-0 on Thursday and then did the unthinkable by knocking off Liberal, one of the state's best offensive teams.

"We want to get on the map," Burgey said. "We want respect, and we came out here trying to get it. I think with those two wins and this title, we still have a ways to go, but we're on the map."

Liberal won time of possession and shots on goal. The Redskins outshot Hutchinson 27-10, forcing goalie J.D. McKee to work hard to keep his team in the game.

"They are so skilled with the ball," McKee said. "We've been trying to focus on just watching the ball and not their feet, but they're taking the ball with their feet. They're skilled with it and without the ball. It's very frustrating sometimes, because you think that you're going to come in and get a tackle and then they are by you."

McKee had 15 saves and they were seldom easy. He earned the respect of his coach and teammates Saturday.

"Liberal was constantly coming at us and he took away the angles like he's been working on," Hutchinson coach Brad Binns said."... We always tell him that the goalkeeper's job is to make the easy saves and then make three saves that you're not supposed to make. He made about six saves that he wasn't supposed to make."

Dodge City won the other bracket's final by defeating Derby 2-1. The Panthers advanced to the title game after a 2-1 upset over Trinity Academy on Wednesday.

Derby senior forward Dan Gouth scored five goals in the tournament and had the Panthers' goal Saturday.
