Maize offense finds right formula

If Maize's soccer team scores a goal on a corner kick, Blair Terry feels a sense of accomplishment.

Terry is never the one scoring the goal, though — she makes the pass from the corner and attempts to put the ball where a teammate can easily knock it in.

After a few close misses Tuesday, the formula worked perfectly as Blair guided a goal by Abby Kern to put the Eagles on the scoreboard and on the way to a 5-0 win over Northwest.

"If I hit a good one I'm pretty sure I know they're going to get it in the back of the net," Terry said. "I'm pretty confident in that, so I don't worry about that. I just worry about me getting it in good."

For a team that has struggled scoring after the loss of several prolific offensive players in 2009, the Eagles' performance Wednesday was much needed.

Maize missed off the crossbar in the third minute and struggled to control a rebound that would have led to an empty-net goal midway through the first half.

But Terry's pass to Kern in the 22nd minute on the Eagles' fifth corner kick of the half allowed Maize's offense to flow. Terry scored the first of her two goals less than five minutes later and Logan Shupe made it 3-0 late in the first half.

"We've had a difficult time scoring lately," Maize coach Jay Holmes said. "But I think we've found some good combinations up top now and have some good chemistry going."

Northwest was without senior goalkeeper Kaisha McCaffrey and defender Robyn Davis, who were participating in a separate school activity.

The Grizzlies had few offensive opportunities, taking three shots and rarely controlling the ball.

Freshman Paige Welborn, in her debut at goalkeeper, made 11 saves for Northwest.

"That's too many goals to give up," Northwest coach Bobby Bribiesca said. "We played in the red zone defensively from the get-go. They knocked the ball around well and we always seemed to be a step behind."
