Heights has plenty of senior leadership

It's not rare for a soccer team to feature a standout scorer or a lockdown defender. Teams become special when they can combine both.

The Heights girls are laboring toward that "special" label with a 2-2 record, but the chance for a memorable season still exists because of forward Selby Polley and defender Rebekah Ramstack.

They're part of a six-person senior class that has the Falcons thinking about a deep postseason run.

"Sometimes you get one or the other and you try to make due in the other spots," Heights coach Steve Parks said. "You have to have one on both (offense and defense) to be pretty successful."

Parks has seen the leadership skills of Polley and Ramstack improve, though they were strong when he became coach two seasons ago. Polley and Ramstack are co-captains along with defender Monica McCarthy.

With a deep senior class, though, leadership can come from several sources.

"Even though we have three captains that are seniors, there very easily could be a freshman who follows the lead of a senior who is not a captain," Parks said. "We're a close team, but some players gravitate to others and I think that's a positive thing."

Ramstack is the leader of a defense that includes McCarthy and Sarah Mohesky, another senior. Ramstack was an All-Metro and coaches all-state selection last season.

Polley scored 20 goals a season ago, but the best indication of her strengths is her 11 assists.

"Selby is probably one of the most talented offensive players I've seen that's not a selfish player," Parks said. "Every year from her freshman year on, she's scored one less goal, and a lot of people think that's a negative and don't appreciate her stats for what they are... Selby plays to incorporate everybody into the game."

City showdown _ Kapaun Mount Carmel and Bishop Carroll meet Tuesday in one of the first important games on the City League schedule.

Carroll improved to 5-0 after a 5-0 win over Wichita Trinity on Monday. The Eagles haven't allowed a goal despite a difficult early-season schedule that has included games against Goddard and Rose Hill.

Kapaun's only loss is to state power Washburn Rural. The Crusaders have a Titan Classic championship-game win over Maize.

In another crucial CL game, Heights plays at Northwest tonight.
