As Kapaun's girls soccer coach Alan Shepherd prepared his team for penalty kicks in the final of the blue bracket in the Titan Classic on Saturday, sophomore goalie Laurel Lujano wasn't around.

Lujano had already taken her place next to the goal, confident and ready to defend against Maize.

Shepherd knew he didn't need to say anything to her.

"I'm confident in her because she's so darn confident in herself," Shepherd said. "I didn't even get a chance to talk to her, she was already back there. She was ready to get in the pipes."

Lujano was set up with a 2-1 lead and that's all she would need.

Lujano saved a shot by Maize's Kelsey Lyden, and Kapaun's Kristen Rathert scored to seal Kapaun's victory.

Kapaun was 4 for 4 on penalty kicks from Taylor Kruse (who scored with 2:55 left in the second half to tie it), Erin Johnston, Katie Kempf and Rathert. Blair Terry was the only scorer for Maize in penalty kicks.

"I just didn't want to psyche myself out and not be so nervous and just have confidence in the goal," Lujano said. "It was a guess on (Lyden's shot). I don't watch the girl, I watch the ball and when it went to my right, I followed."

Maize controlled the first 60 minutes, including its goal by Courtney Galliher with 18:16 left in the first half. But with 20 minutes left in regulation, Kapaun picked up its attack.

Pushing up another forward, Kapaun changed the momentum.

" (Kapaun) sent another forward in to put pressure on our defense and we tried to adjust," Maize coach Jay Holmes said. "In hindsight maybe I should have left them the way they were, but I couldn't take a chance with their speed up top."

Kruse's tying goal came after Caroline Kastor sped by two Maize defenders and centered a pass that Kruse was able to put away.

"We had to work for everything we had, every goal, every shot, we had to work for it," Shepherd said. "It was great individual effort. It's a great win because Maize is such a great team."

Both teams had a chance before the penalty kicks.

Kastor missed on a free kick as time expired in the first overtime and Maize's Abby Kern missed a header high at the end of the second overtime.

"That's the best high school soccer game that I've been involved with in a long time in terms of competitiveness," Holmes said. "Kapaun brought the best out of us, we just came up short."

East edges South — After East's freshman Lauren Sinik tied the game with 30 seconds left in regulation, East won 3-2 on penalty kicks.

Both goalies saved two penalty kicks, but South missed off the post giving the game to East.

"They seemingly outworked us until the last 30 seconds and we just got through," East coach Jim Griffis said. "We wanted to get a jump on things and to have a good showing here to carry that momentum forward. This big for us and it's nice to have."
