It's not a surprise to Southeast senior Aarian Tipton that the Buffaloes' relay teams, the staple of their program, were on another level on Friday night at the Southeast Invitational.

Both the 400- and 1600-meter relay teams, each of which placed in the top three at the Class 6A track meet last year, won their races Friday at Northwest.

The reason for the success has been the solidarity between the teams. Tipton, Dana Gates and Jamillah Bonner all ran together last season on both teams. Tiffany Anderson and Brittany Mason have filled the holes.

"I think now we're getting better because none of the people really changed," Tipton said. "We're kind of picking up where we left off last year."

Being early in the season, team scores weren't the main focus. Testing athletes in different events and determining who can score in what event were the main goals of most coaches. On Friday, Southeast came out looking the best by winning both team titles.

"We really don't have any idea of how good we are going to be until the end of the year," Northwest coach Ron Russell said. "But right now, as far as the City League goes, Southeast has looked phenomenal."

For the Southeast girls team, it begins with its foundation with the sprinters. The 400 relay team won its race in a time of 49.52 and the 1600 team won in 4:21.26.

"It's really nice to not have to pick up the slack being the anchor," Tipton said. "We're all kind of even. If everybody does their work, then nobody has to do any extra work."

Bettering its times from last season has been the focus this year.

"I think we can be very good," Bonner said. "I really want us to come first at state, so I think we can be very good."

The Buffaloes' boys team was led by Steven Calloway (sprints), Skylar Gutierrez (distance) and Jeff Conner (throws). The three were a part of 62 of Southeast's 123 points.

"I ran so hard because I was scared of losing," Calloway said. "I've trained really hard, so I just did my best."

One surprise came in the boys long jump. North junior DeAntae Daniels jumped a personal best of 21 feet, 8 3/4 inches to edge Southeast's Joseph Randle.

"I feel like I accomplished a lot," Daniels. "I tried to focus on keeping my knees high and just don't look down. Just jump."

Maize, led by Miles Ukaoma, Garrett Hoch and Mike Day, finished second in the boys team race. Heights, behind Lewis Taylor, Skylarr Gatson and Taylor Cross, was third.

On the girls' side, Maize's Dani Walker (1600, 3200) and Lisa Tomasu (both hurdles) won two events. East finished second in the team race, led by its distance running.
