North bowlers win CL tournaments

North bowling coach Mike Long can’t explain it. If he could, he said he would write a book. For some reason, Long’s boys and girls teams just don’t fold under pressure. Saturday’s City League bowling tournament at West Acres was just the latest example. North’s girls overcame a 96-pin deficit to Heights in the final game to win the tournament and finish with a share of the overall City League title with the Falcons.

North’s boys came in tied for third in the overall City League standings, dropped to fourth after losing a coin toss, then bounced back to win the tournament and finish tied for first overall with Bishop Carroll. The Eagles finished third on Saturday.

With two tournament titles and two league co-championships, Long couldn’t have planned it any better.

“It was an unbelievable day, a fantastic finish to a great season,” Long said. “The credit goes to the kids. They’ve worked hard and listened and made things worth the whileæ.æ.æ. this is their reward.”

The North boys were led by individual champion Kyle Wright. Wright bowled a 702 series — the only bowler to break 700 — with a new ball he got last week.

“Me and my coach have worked quite a bit the last couple of weeks,” Wright said. “I worked hard for three years and finally I pulled it off.”

North’s Ryan Ingram tied for fifth with a 655 series and Devin Ellington also medaled with a 623 series.

“I think the girls kind of rubbed off on the boys, they are starting to understand that we can do this and make it happen,” Long said.

The Heights girls looked poised for back-to-back championships with the top three bowlers after their 868 second game. North finished with three of the top four placers as sophomore Victoria Garcia tied senior Ally Johnson for second with a 626 series, Garcia’s season and career best, while senior Nesa Hubbard finished fourth.

“It’s just something with this group of girls, they never think they’re out of it until it’s over,” Long said. “I had my two seniors who have been here before, Ally and Nesa, but I am very impressed with Victoria. She did a fantastic job.”

Heights’ Katlyn Carlson, a junior-varsity bowler for most of the season, won the girls individual title with a 651 series. Heights just added Carlson as the sixth varsity bowler for this meet and going forward.

“Katlyn has always been real good in the big tournaments,” Heights assistant coach Justin Crumley said. “She always shows up at the biggest tournaments and is real good with team chemistry. Today, she helped carry us through.”

The Heights boys, which came in tied for first place with Bishop Carroll, fell to fourth in the tournament and third overall. Brandon Deck finished third with a 688 series.

For the Heights girls, it was a disappointing finish to its second consecutive undefeated regular season.

“It’s definitely not exactly the way we wanted it to go, we just weren’t able to finish it off this year,” Crumley said.

South, which finished in a tie for fifth in the regular season, placed second as a team. The Titans were led by William Paul, who finished second with a 691 series.

“I felt like we had this in us all year,” South coach Cody Dickman said. “William has worked harder than anybody on our team. He earns everything he gets.”

AV-CTL Div. 1-2 — The Derby boys won the team title and Maize’s Troy Roseire won individual honors with a 797 series. Derby’s 2,812 total was 58 pins ahead of Maize.

The Newton girls topped Maize by 63 pins in the girls team race. Courtney Hill of Campus rolled 643 for the individual title.

AV-CTL Div. 3-4 — El Dorado won the boys tournament, led by Scott Rebholz, who finished fifth with a 613 series. Scottie Bisarek from Augusta won the boys individual title with a 675 series. Buhler won the overall title.

Buhler remained undefeated and won the girls tournament and overall title led by Alana Hunt, who finished third. Chario Carter from Augusta won the girls individual title with a 644 series.
