The early part of the season will be a learning experience for the Kapaun Mount Carmel girls team.
That includes coach Damian Smithhisler.
The Crusaders graduated four starters from last year's team. Sophomore point guard Katie Anderson is the lone returning starter.
Surrounded by unproven players, Kapaun's practices are a lot like meet and greets.
"I think I'll have a pretty good mix, it's just hard to figure out because we're all so new to each other," Smithhisler said. "It will take some time, but we will be all right. We will figure things out."
Anderson started 21 of 22 games last season. She wasn't asked to score much last season, but this season her role in the offense should change, Smithhisler said.
"We been an interior dominated team, but I expect her to score more," Smithhisler said.
Joining Anderson in the backcourt will be fellow sophomore Courtney Gahagan. Gahagan saw valuable minutes off the bench last season.
Emily Lantz and Alex Rodriguez will be the inside presence. Lantz is sidelined with a knee injury and probably won't return until January.
"That's going to hurt us because we believe in taking high-percentage shots and Lantz is going to play a part in that," Smithhisler said.
