Defending champion Katy Nugent shot a 74 and took a two-shot lead Tuesday after the opening round of the KWGA Amateur at MacDonald Park.
Audrey Yowell of McPherson, Emily McDonald of Topeka and Gianna Misenhelter of Overland Park each had a round of 76. Twelve players are within five strokes of Nugent after the opening round.
The 54-hole tournament continues with rounds today and Thursday.
Nugent, a former high school state champion at Andover, played two seasons at Arkansas. She has transferred to Kansas, and will be a junior this fall.

Nugent won last year's Kansas Women's Golf Association event at Highland Golf Course in Hutchinson. Emily Houtz of Manhattan, last year's runner-up, shot a 78 on Tuesday.
