▪ Drake-Wichita State matches two of the MVC’s fastest-paced teams.
The Bulldogs scored 100-plus twice this season. The Shockers enter off a 100-66 win over Bradley, its first century mark in MVC play since 1988 and has two 100-point games for the first time since that 1987-88 season.
Drake, according to kenpom.com, leads the MVC in tempo and is playing faster in two MVC games than it did in the non-conference schedule. WSU ranks third.
The Bulldogs picked up the pace since interim coach Jeff Rutter replaced Ray Giacoletti in early December. Under Rutter, Drake averages 81.7 points and 75.9 possessions a game. Under Giacoletti, it averaged 66 possessions a game.
“They are playing faster, they are mixing up their defenses, they are shooting the three-ball, things that they have to do to be successful,” WSU coach Gregg Marshall said.
▪ That means tonight could turn into a sloppy mess.
Drake turns the ball over way too frequently to win many games. It ends 20.5 percent of its possessions with a turnover, which ranks No. 261 nationally.
In four of the past six meetings, including both last season, the Shockers forced more turnovers by the Bulldogs than it allowed baskets. In those six meetings, Drake averaged 15 turnovers and 16.1 baskets.
▪ Drake has been playing some 2-3 and 1-3-1 zone defense. If the Shockers can make shots and force the Bulldogs into a man defense, it’s to WSU’s benefit.
