Wichita State Shockers

Southern Illinois beats Wichita State 8-5 in extra innings

Wichita State’s ninth-inning rally went for naught Saturday in Carbondale, Ill.

Down a run, the Shockers (16-26, 6-5) staged a two-out rally to gain a tie and send the game to extra innings.

But Ryan Smith’s three-run homer in the 10th gave Southern Illinois an 8-5 victory.

The series is even at a game apiece heading into Sunday’s finale.

Down 5-4 wiht two outs in the ninth, WSU pinch-hitter Ryan Tinkham hit a fly ball to left that SIU leftfielder Greg Lambert let fall in front of him.

Trey Vickers and Mikel Mucha walked to load the bases for Luke Ritter.

With two strikes, Ritter hit a shot over the left-field fence but was foul. He then hit a infield single that SIU second baseman Connor Kopach made a diving stop to keep the ball from going into the outfield, preventing more than one run from scoring.

Kopach opened the bottom of the 10th with a single and Dyllin Mucha drew a walk. WSU releiver John Hayes retired the next to batters, but Smith hit his third homer of the season to give SIU the win.

SIU (24-18-1, 5-6) surged to a 5-1 lead after two innings. The Shockers’ run was Alec Bohm’s second homer of the season. Ritter homered in the third to cut the deficit to 5-2.

Chase Rader doubled to open the fourth and scored on Dayton Dugas’ infield groundout.

Ritter walked to lead off the eighth and scored when Gunnar Troutwine hit into a double play, cutting the deficit to 5-4.

The loss overshadowed a nifty relief effor by Codi Heuer. Heuer came on in the second with none out and the bases loaded. He allowed a run-scoring single and got a double-play grounder before ending the inning. He then shut out SIU for the next five innings.

Notes: Bohm, who homered in his first at-bat of the season, went 111 at-bats before hitting his next homer. He is on a seven-game hitting streak and is 11 for 28 (.393) during that stretch.… Clayton McGinness (1-2, 7.36 ERA) will pitch for WSU on Sunday.… Jenista has hit safely in eight straight games, going 13 for 33 (.394).… WSU is 1-1 in extra-inning games.… WSU was 2 for 14 batting with runners in scoring position while SIU was 5 for 16. WSU was 2 for 13 with runners on base while SIU was 4 for 12.
