Wichita State pitchers struggle in 17-7 loss to New Mexico

Wichita State pitchers handed out 12 walks as the Shockers lost their third in a row, a 17-7 drubbing by New Mexico on Friday in Albuquerque.

WSU batters matched the Lobos’ 17 hits but the walks spelled the difference. Six of the walks allowed by WSU scored.

There were some bright spots for WSU. Tanner Kirk, moved to the leadoff spot, had three hits. Chase Rader, who entered batting 2 for 12, went 3 for 3 and was hit by a pitch.

Freshman Alec Bohm had three hits. Freshman Dayton Dugas, who had struck out six straight times, got two hits, including a double.

The Shockers, trailing 17-2 going into the top of the ninth, scored five runs. New Mexico pitchers had not walked a batter until the ninth when Taylor Duree handed out three. The big hit of the inning was Luke Ritter’s bases-loaded three-run double.
