A Trey Vickers throwing error led to two unearned runs in the first inning, and Houston defeated Wichita State 3-1 on Friday night in Houston to start a three-game weekend series.

Connor Hollis opened the first inning for the Cougars with a walk and advanced to second on an infield out. Jared Triolo hit a grounder to Vickers at short. Vickers tried to throw out Hollis at third but the throw was wild and Hollis scored.

With two outs, Tyler Bielamowicz singled in Triolo with the second unearned run of the inning.

WSU junior Codi Heuer, who pitched a career-high eight innings, allowed another run in the third. He then retired 15 of the last 17 hitters he faced.

Wichita State (26-10, 4-6 AAC) scored in the third when Jordan Boyer led off with a single and scored on a single by Vickers.

Trey Cumbie went eight innings for league-leading Houston (23-15, 8-5). After the third, he retired the final 18 batters with the help of a double play in the seventh.

Saturday’s scheduled game has been postponed to Sunday in anticipation of rain. Sunday’s doubleheader will begin at 1 p.m.
