Seth Martinez made a successful pitching debut for Arizona State, and the Sun Devils defeated Wichita State 9-5 Tuesday night in Tempe, Ariz.
Martinez, a freshman, went four innings, striking out six and was awarded the win.
The Shockers (11-7) fell behind 6-1 after five innings but were handed three runs in the sixth. With two outs and runners on first (Garrett Bayliff) and second (Casey Gillaspie), Micah Green hit a grounder to shortstop that Colby Woodmansee threw into right field trying to force Bayliff at second. Bayliff and Gillaspie scored, and Green scored later when Chase Simpson tripled.
But ASU (10-8) put the game away in the eighth. Cullen O’Dwyer doubled and Woodmansee followed with a single and Drew Stankiewicz hit his first homer of the season, only the second allowed this season by Shocker pitchers.
Notes: WSU’s Garrett Brummett (1-0, 6.00 ERA) will face Zak Miller (1-0, 9.35) in Wednesday’s series finale.… ASU’s Woodmansee got a rare bunt double in the fourth. He was called to sacrifice and bunted down the third-base line. Shocker third baseman Chase Simpson tripped and fell trying to field the ball. The ball rolled foul, but the home plate umpire ruled Simpton touched it. Woodmansee wound up on second with a double.
O’Dwyer reached on catcher’s interference.
