Wichita State’s move up the Associated Press top 25 poll is stalled at No. 4. In the coaches poll, however, the Shockers continue to climb.

The Shockers are No. 4 in the AP poll of 65 writers and broadcasters for the second straight week despite a loss by a team ranked in the top three. This week, Arizona dropped to No. 2 from No. 1 after its loss at California on Saturday night. A week ago, Florida jumped three spots to No. 3 to pass the Shockers, who rose one spot to No. 4.

Syracuse is the nation’s new No. 1 team, followed by Arizona (21-1), Florida (19-2), WSU and San Diego State (19-1). Kansas (16-5) dropped two spots to No. 8. Creighton (18-3) is No. 12, followed by Saint Louis (20-2).

The Shockers rose to No. 2 in the coaches poll, up one spot. They received 745 points to No. 1 Syracuse’s 800. No. 3 Arizona has 725 points.

Kansas dropped two spots to No. 9 in the coaches poll. USA Today compiles the poll of 32 NCAA Division I coaches.

Syracuse (21-0) and WSU (23-0) are the nation’s lone unbeaten teams.

WSU’s No. 4 ranking is its highest since it spent one week at No. 2, in the Dec. 29, 1981 AP poll. During that month, it also peaked at No. 4, spending three weeks there, in the coaches poll administered at that time by the UPI.

The Shockers ascended to No. 1 in both polls in the Dec. 15, 1964 voting. After a loss to No. 2 Michigan, WSU dropped to No. 2 in both polls, where it stayed for two weeks.

The Shockers play at Indiana State on Wednesday. Kansas plays at Baylor on Tuesday.
