On the road
Wichita State kept Indiana State guard Jake Odum, a preseason All-Missouri Valley Conference pick, under control for long stretches, especially in the first half. The Shockers denied him the ball and forced other Sycamores to make plays.
Odum finished with 10 points and four assists, scoring eight in the second half. He didn’t need to do everything for the Sycamores. Manny Arop scored 17 points. Freshman guard Devonte Brown added 10, including a steal and layup that gave Indiana State a 58-50 lead with 3:35 to play and took most of the hope out of the crowd. Junior guard Dawon Cummings came off the bench to score nine points.
With that balanced scoring, the Sycamores shot 53.3 percent from the floor, best of any WSU opponent this season.
“He’s not only the player on their team,” WSU coach Gregg Marshall said. “They had a lot of good performers. How many good performances did we have? It’s hard to pick a a player of the game.”
Another blue day
WSU last lost at Koch Arena on Dec. 31, 2011, 69-61 to Creighton. It then reeled off 19 straight until Tuesday’s loss.
WSU’s record is 22 games, from Feb. 18, 1982 to Dec. 20, 1983. It also won 20 games in a row from Dec. 12, 1987 to Jan. 14, 1989 and from 1926 to 1928.
On his own
WSU guard Ron Baker is off crutches, a small step in the right direction for his recovery from a stress fracture in his left foot.
He remains in a walking boot and is limited in the amount he can exercise as he continues to rehab the injury. Baker started 10 games before the injury sidelined him, averaging 7.3 points and 2.6 rebounds.
WSU unfurled the Sweet 16 volleyball banner from 2012 during a second-half timeout. Coach Chris Lamb and the team watched from the court.… The Sycamores hadn’t won in Wichita since 2004.…Indiana State’s bench outscored WSU’s 17-13.… WSU’s Cleanthony Early scored 15 points and grabbed 11 rebounds, his third double-double of the season. His rebounding total matched his season high.
