Wichita State catcher Chris O’Brien signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers, passing up his senior season.
The Dodgers picked O’Brien in the 18th round of the draft earlier this month. He hit. 410 with 25 doubles and 10 home runs, earning numerous All-America honors. He is one of three finalists for the Johnny Bench Award given next week to the nation’s top catcher. O’Brien’s latest honors are recognition as a third-team All-American and Midwest All-Region by the American Baseball Coaches Association. Pitcher Charlie Lowell, who signed with the Marlins, was named to the All-Region second team.
Evansville third baseman Cody Fick, Creighton outfielder Trever Adams, who played at Hutchinson Community College and Creighton pitcher Jonas Dufek were also named All-Region. Kansas State outfielder Nick Martini and pitcher James Allen were named to the second team.
