Hatch named to Valley scholar-athlete team for second time

Wichita State's Graham Hatch is a repeat selection to the Missouri Valley Conference scholar-athlete team. Hatch, a senior from Mesa, Ariz., carries a 3.67 grade-point average in chemistry. WSU junior Garrett Stutz, with a 3.24 GPA in finance, is on the honorable mention team. Also on the first team are Northern Iowa's Kwadzo Ahelegbe, Missouri State's Will Creekmore, Bradley's Dodie Dunson and Indiana State's Jordan Printy. IDITAROD

Defending champion Lance Mackey pulled into the checkpoint at Nikolai, Alaska, just two days into the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race and said a fifth victory does not look promising.

According to the Iditarod's official Website, Mackey pulled into the checkpoint carrying two dogs in his sled, and had just put a third dog back in the team after carrying it for a ways. Mushers will carry dogs when they aren't pulling well so they don't slow down the team.

Mackey left the Nikolai checkpoint about 350 miles from Anchorage with a 12-dog team, considered small for this early in the 1,150-mile race to Nome. Mushers normally begin the race with 16-dog teams and must finish with at least six. Mushers will leave dogs at checkpoints where they will be cared for and flown back to Anchorage if they are sick, injured or not performing well.

Mackey was in third place Tuesday, behind Sebastian Schnuelle and four-time champion Martin Buser who was leading the race.

GOLF

Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson will be in the same group at Doral for the first time this year.

The Cadillac Championship decided to based the groups for the first two rounds on the rankings. It's similar to what the European Tour did in Dubai last month and the U.S. Open did at Torrey Pines in 2008.

That puts Martin Kaymer, the new No. 1., in the same group with Lee Westwood and Match Play winner Luke Donald. However, the greater focus will be on the next batch of players — Graeme McDowell at No. 4, Woods and Mickelson.

* The Wichita State men's team placed sixth at the Del Walker Intercollegiate in Long Beach, Calif. Hunter Sparks and Tyler Gann tied for 11th in the individual standings, with both shooting three round scores of 216.

Santa Clara won the team title and UCLA's Gregor Main took medalist honors.
