Northern Iowa women pierce Wichita State's defense

Jody Adams has made it a priority for the Wichita State women's basketball team to take on an identity of a team built on its defense.

On Friday night the Shockers took more of a laissez-faire approach to defense, as Northern Iowa scooted its way to a season sweep of WSU with a 77-57 victory at Koch Arena.

"We let things fall right into their lap," Adams said. "They're a team that relies on their sets and you have to do things that are going to disrupt those sets and keep them guessing. We didn't keep them guessing."

Wichita State isn't the first team that has failed to do so, as the Missouri Valley-leading Panthers (16-5, 9-1 MVC) have won by an average margin of 22 points in league play.

But the lack of grit on defense for WSU (10-11, 4-6) was concerning for Adams.

"If you continue to chase them and you don't touch them, you're falling right into their hands," Adams said. "We fell right into their hands, really from the beginning."

Adams said WSU was just getting by through the first 27 minutes of the game, when it did just enough to keep UNI from running away.

Finally Northern Iowa penalized the Shockers for their defense, making 6 of 7 shots during an 18-5 run to take a 60-45 lead.

UNI made more than half of its shots (28 of 53) for the game and had five players score in double figures.

"Nothing rattled them," said WSU senior Morgan Boyd, "nothing."

Without their defense generating fast-break attempts, the Shockers' offense was halted. WSU never found a rhythm, making 17 of 54 shots (31.5 percent).

WSU's main ballhandlers committed 11 of the team's 18 turnovers.

"We weren't being as aggressive as we needed to be," WSU's Jessica Diamond said.

It wasn't pretty for WSU, which is 0-7 when opponents score more than 60 points, but Adams conceded partial credit to Northern Iowa.

"There's a reason why they're number one in the Valley," Adams said.

"But I can't say that everyone on our team was at the tempo they should have been and with the right mentality."
