HUTCHINSON — Wichita State University's Anders Engell and Dustin Garza stand tied in second place in the individual standings after 36 holes in the Missouri Valley Conference golf tournament at Prairie Dunes Country Club.
Engell and Garza are both 13-over par, one shot behind Southern Illinois' Patrick Scheil who shot two rounds of 76.
"We didn't play very good today, we didn't drive the ball very well, but we still got a chance," WSU coach Grier Jones said. "It was extremely, extremely difficult conditions. I'm not sure that I've ever seen any more difficult than that. Along with the pin placements, it was about as tough as it could be."
Wichita State holds a one shot lead over Southern Illinois for the team championship with a 624. Illinois State is in third, 17 shots back.
"This is as hard as I've seen Prairie Dunes set up," Jones said.
Engell shot a 74 in his first round which was tied with Drake's Brad Reierson for lowest round of the day.
Garza, the MVC co-champion in 2009 and No. 1 in the GolfStat Cup standings with a 70.39 scoring average before Monday's rounds, shot a 78 and 75 in his two rounds. He nearly chipped in twice on the 14th and 16th holes on a day that the wind blew and made the conditions very tough.
"Anders had a good round this morning and not a horrible round this afternoon. He's real capable," Jones said. "We need all of our guys to play good, rather than just one or two."
The final 18 holes start for Garza at 9:30 this morning with Scheil and Illinois State's Jeff Kellen who is tied for ninth. Engell goes tees off at 9:20, and with conditions similar to Monday in the forecast, Jones knows it could be another tough day.
"We need to play well, and play well for ourselves and everything will take care of itself," Jones said.
