Shocker women look sharp in win over Evansville

While Wichita State's 68-43 victory over Evansville on Friday night didn't signify a complete reversal of fortune for the women's basketball program, it certainly accentuated the changing culture under second-year coach Jody Adams.

On one side was a team that bumbled through the game, flinging airballs toward the rim and serving up a platter of turnovers. In the past, that may have been Wichita State.

This isn't the past.

The Shockers (15-11) bullied the hapless Aces, who finished with 29 turnovers and shot 31 percent.

"I challenged this team all week long to get back to the very basics of what we need to do and what we need to take care of," Adams said.

While the Shockers are nowhere near a finished product, they have a foundation to build upon.

"I think it's just because we like to outwork and out-compete," said WSU freshman Michelle Price.

Against Evansville, Price scored a career-high 16 points on 6-of-7 shooting and grabbed seven rebounds.

"There's something special about Michelle and it's that she does something other people don't want to do," Adams said. "She outworks people. She's not perfect, but her activeness puts her back in the position she should be in. It takes her athleticism to another level."

Point guard Marisah Henderson finished with nine assists, including alley-oop layups to Price, Jazimen Gordon and Chynna Turner.

"We've repped it a lot," said Turner, who scored a game-high 17 points. "We got our timing good, so we're very confident in it."

Added Henderson: "It's a lot of fun to be able to throw the ball by the rim and watch them go get it. It makes for an easy pass for me."

In a must-win game if WSU hopes to avoid a play-in game in the conference tournament, Wichita State separated itself early. A 12-0 start to the game allowed the Shockers to maintain a double-digit lead the rest of the game. A 12-0 run to close the game sealed the win.
