Wichita State gets 18 hits to win baseball opener

A mix of newcomers and veterans got Wichita State baseball off to a flying start Friday.

The Shockers pounded out 18 hits and whipped North Florida 14-4 in the South Alabama Classic in Mobile, Ala.

Newcomer Preston Springer, a transfer from Odessa (Texas) Junior College, got four hits, including a homer and a double, driving in two runs.

Veteran catcher Cody Lassley also had four hits, including a double.

Veteran right fielder Ryan Jones got three hits and drover in four runs. He also tripled, something he didn’t do last season.

Freshman third baseman Erik Harbutz of Wichita Northwest went 1 for 3 and drove in two runs. In addition, he walked three times.

Sophomore Tyler Grimes also homered for the Shockers.

Tim Kelley picked up the victory, going 5Ð innings and allowing seven hits.

After scoring three unearned runs in the first, WSU put the game out of reach with a six-run fifth.

With one out in the sixth, Clint McKeever singled. Springer followed with a run-scoring double. Lassley singled off the pitcher Mike Kelly’s leg. Jones then tripled to right-center to score two runs.

Pinch-hitter Travis Bennett hit a run-scoring grounder to short. After Grimes walked, Kevin Hall was hit by a pitch. Harbutz followed with a long double to left for two more runs.

Notes — WSU is 25-8 in season openers in the Gene Stephenson era.æ.æ.æ. The 14 runs scored was the most in an opener since the Shockers got 16 in the 2003 opener against Hawaii-Hilo.æ.æ.æ. WSU had won 9 of its last 10 openers and three in a row.
