Wichita State athletic trainer dies in Iowa

Wichita State athletic trainer Brett Anderson died in his sleep late Friday or early Saturday while home in Iowa for Christmas break.

Mr. Anderson, 24, came to WSU for the fall semester and worked primarily with the track and field program.

"We hired him in July and he really immediately starting building very good working and personal relationships," head athletic trainer Dan Cahill said. "He loved track. He really enjoyed working with those guys."

Mr. Anderson, from Winterset, Iowa, played soccer at Central (Iowa) College and earned his Masters degree at Wyoming. He worked as a trainer at Wyoming and interned with the Arizona Cardinals.

"He was a wonderful guy," WSU track coach Steve Rainbolt said. "A very caring individual."

Visitation will be held at the First Baptist Church in Winterset from 1-8 p.m. on Tuesday. The funeral service is at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday at the First Baptist Church.

"I know he worked tirelessly to support the sport programs, particularly track and field," WSU athletic director Eric Sexton said. "Our deepest condolences from the athletic department go out to Brett's family at this sad time."
