Cowley gets run-rule win in opening game

Kea’von Edwards and Ross Messina homered in a four-run fourth inning, then Cowley College scored nine runs over two innings to run-rule Wallace-Dothan (Ala.) 13-5 in the opening game of the NJCAA World Series on Saturday in Grand Junction, Colo.

Edwards’ homer was a three-run shot for the game’s first runs. Messina followed with a solo homer to left-center field.

Wallace-Dothan pulled within 7-5 in the seventh inning, but Cowley (44-16) scored three runs on three bases-loaded walks. Brooks Zimmerman followed with a hit to right-center that cleared the bases and ended the game on a run rule.

Garrett Hutson allowed four runs and seven hits over seven innings for the win. Wallace-Dothan (42-20) is making its first World Series appearance.

Cowley is off until a Monday night game in the second round of the winners bracket.
