Friends’ season ends in national quarterfinals

Fifth-ranked Indiana Wesleyan beat Friends 95-79 in the quarterfinals of the NAIA Division II men’s basketball tournament on Saturday in Point Lookout, Mo.

Indiana Wesleyan took an 11-0 lead as Friends missed its first four shots, and the lead grew to 21-6 as the Falcons’ offensive struggles continued. Friends battled back, hitting five three-pointers during a 26-13 run that got the Falcons within 34-32 with 5:31 left in the first half, but Friends was never able to take the lead. Friends’ deficit hovered between five and 10 points for much of the second half until Wesleyan pulled away in the final five minutes.

Senior Joe Mitchell scored 28 points to lead Friends. Reserve Blake Wilson hit 4 of 5 three-pointers and scored 12, Zach Nelson scored 11 and Anthony White had 10 points and 13 rebounds.

Indiana Wesleyan’s Jordan Weidner had 35 points and 12 assists. Wesleyan shot 53.3 percent (32 of 60), and hit 12 of 25 three-point shots.

Friends tied the school record with 27 wins and advanced to the quarterfinals for the first time in school history.

St. Francis (Ind.) women 76, Southwestern 61 — The Moundbuilders’ season ended in the quarterfinals of the NAIA Division II women’s tournament. Unbeaten St. Francis took control immediately, building a 22-7 lead that grew to 40-20 by halftime as St. Francis held Southwestern to 7-of-28 shooting.

Junior Montana Rickey came off the bench and scored a team-high 15 points for Southwestern. Sheri Zoglmann, a senior from Conway Springs, scored 13.

Southwestern amassed a school-record 30 wins on the way to its first appearance in the national quarterfinals.
