Emporia State women win MIAA basketball title

No. 7 Emporia State defended its MIAA women’s basketball tournament championship Sunday with a 75-71 victory over Central Missouri in Kansas City, Mo.

Emporia State (28-3), the second seed, dealt an early blow to top-seed Central Missouri with a 17-0 first-half run that enabled the Hornets to lead 38-29 at halftime. That all came after Central Missouri led 19-12 with 12:42 to play in the first half.

Central Missouri (25-4) rallied in the second half to the game at 71-all with 1:19 to play, but Cheney native Merissa Quick made a hook shot with a minute remaining, then another with 10 seconds to go for the game-winning margin. She was named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player.
