Tabor College player dies from injuries; arrest made

Tabor College football player Brandon Brown died Saturday night from injuries sustained in an early-morning assault last Sunday in McPherson.

Brown was pronounced dead at Via Christi on St. Francis at 10:16 p.m.

McPherson police arrested a 19-year-old Texas man Saturday for aggravated battery in the case, and a release from McPherson Police Chief Robert McClarty said more charges are expected to be filed after Brown’s death.

Alton Franklin, from Dallas, was listed on the 2011 McPherson College football roster but is not on this year’s roster. McPherson College president Michael Schneider confirmed Saturday that Franklin is still enrolled in school.

Brown, 26, was found beaten, unconscious and unresponsive early last Sunday morning in the 400 block of North Carrie in McPherson. He had been on life support at Via Christi on Saint Francis since being airlifted from McPherson Hospital last Sunday.

In a release announcing Franklin’s arrest, McClarty stated that the investigation into the case is still ongoing and that McPherson authorities are now working with the Kansas Bureau of Investigation.

McClarty would not comment beyond the statement.

“I’ve been in contact with (McClarty) and we’ve been cooperating with the investigation,” Schneider said. “I’m going to be sending a note out to the student body to keep them apprised of the situation..”

Franklin’s bond was set at $100,000 and he is being held at McPherson County jail.

Brown, from Sacramento, transferred to Tabor from Santa Ana (Calif.) College and has a three-year-old son and a 7-month old daughter.

Brown’s family, who flew in early last week from California, confirmed his death via text message on Saturday night but declined to comment.
