Cowley softball bounces back at nationals

Freshman second baseman Haley Strawn hit a pair of home runs to lift Cowley Community College to a 6-2 win over Illinois Central on Friday at the NJCAA Division II National Tournament in Clinton, Miss.

After losing to top-seeded LSU-Eunice 7-0 earlier Friday, the victory kept the Tigers alive at the double-elimination tournament. Cowley will play Parkland at 9:30 a.m. this morning, and if they continue to win, will play again at 11:30 a.m., 1:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. — which would mean Cowley advanced to the championship.

Against Illinois Central, Courtney Rash started the scoring in the first inning with a three-run double. Strawn hit a two-run home run in the second inning and a solo home runi n the sixth.

Mulvane native Taylor Parsons earned the win for Cowley, her second victory at the national tournament.

Against LSU-Eunice, Cowley and starting pitcher Haleigh Sills held the defending national champions scoreless until the bottom of the fifth, when the Bengals erupted for five hits and five runs. The loss snapped a 17-game winning streak for Sills.
