Butler loses football opener to top-ranked Navarro in overtime

Third-ranked Butler Community College fell to No. 1 Navarro 23-16 in overtime on Thursday in Corsicana, Texas, in the season opener for both teams

Butler quarterback Chandler Whitmer took three shots at the back of the end zone to end the game.

It was a rematch of last year's NJCAA title game, which Butler also lost.

Navarro scored on a 1-yard touchdown run by quarterback Adrian Nelson on the first possession of overtime for the game winner.

Butler led 14-13 at halftime and 16-13 with just under two minutes left in the game when Navarro's Trevor Pinkston hit a 23-yard field goal to send the game to overtime. Pinkston kicked three field goals in the victory.

Texas Christian transfer Dwight Smith led Navarro with 112 yards on 17 carries. Whitmer finished just 17 for 39 for 175 yards and one interception.

Kendall Wren led Butler with five catches for 90 yards and a touchdown.

No. 6 Hutchinson 60, Kilgore 29 _ Cordarrelle Patterson racked up 254 all-purpose yards and scored three touchdowns to lead the Blue Dragons to a rout over visiting Kilgore. Patterson scored on a 9-yard touchdown pass in the first quarter and returned two kickoffs for scores, going 97 and 86 yards.

Hutchinson quarterback Elliott Alford was sharp in his season debut, hitting 15 of 17 passes for 174 yards and two touchdowns. Alford also ran for two touchdowns.

Duane Sims led the Blue Dragon defense with nine tackles.

In other Jayhawk Conference action, No. 4 Blinn (Texas) defeated Fort Scott 65-18 at Fort Scott.
