Hutch women reach Region VI final

Even without Jayhawk West MVP Jackie Patterson at her best, the Hutchinson Community College women showed why they're the basketball team to beat in the Region VI Tournament at Koch Arena.

Behind 15 points from Alysse Barlow and the hot shooting of forward Chelsea Small in the first half, the Blue Dragons defeated Independence 55-50 in the semifinals. Hutchinson will try for its second Region VI title in three years against Cloud in today's 6 p.m. final.

Small scored nine points, all on three three-pointers in the first half.

"We were a little nervous at the beginning because Jackie wasn't making the shots she usually makes," Small said. "They tested me when they backed off on those threes and I was able to make them pay for it."

Hutchinson got away from its game plan a bit in the first half when it hit seven threes on the way to a 30-16 halftime lead.

"I think we are a good shooting team, but I would have liked to have seen us work it around a little more," Hutchinson coach John Ontjes said. "I thought we settled for threes too much, but they were going in."

Patterson still made an impact in the win , scoring 12 points and grabbing nine rebounds, although she hit 3 of 14 shots.

Jennifer Johnson led the Pirates with 25 points, including 19 in the second half as Independence got within 50-46 with 1:25 to play.
