Fort Hays pulls off upset in MIAA final

Dominique Jones had 30 points and seven assists Sunday to lead second-seed Fort Hays State past top seed Missouri Southern 89-83 in the championship game of the MIAA men's tournament in Kansas City, Mo.

Jones made 12 of 19 shots, including three three-pointers, to help the Tigers to their first conference championship in any sports since joining the MIAA in 2006-07.

The Tigers blew the game open in the second half, leading by as many as 18 points. Corbin Kuntzsch had 18 points on 7-of-11 shooting, while Dijon Smith added 14 points and 14 rebounds.

Fort Hays State (25-6) earned the MIAA's automatic bid into the NCAA Division II tournament. The fourth-seeded Tigers will play West Texas A&M (23-6) in Saturday's regional quarterfinals in Edmond, Okla. Washburn is the seventh seed and will face MIAA rival Missouri Southern.

Northwest Missouri women 79, Emporia State 63 — Senior Alli Volkens' career-high 29 points, 18 rebounds and three blocked shots weren't enough to overcome top-seed Northwest Missouri in the women's title game.

Northwest Missouri scored the first 10 points, and though ESU rallied to within four, the Bearcats still led 38-24 at halftime.

Emporia State was shut out of the NCAA Division II tournament, but Washburn is in as the No. 4 seed and opens the regional at Tahlequah, Okla., on Friday.
