Coffeyville knocks out Hutch

The weight of expectations did not break the Hutchinson Community College men's basketball team.

What finally took down the team that so many had picked to not only win Region VI this season but to possibly make a run at a national title was a hot-shooting, soft-spoken guard from Coffeyville, foul trouble, giving up offensive rebounds and their star player's lack of a basket in the first half of Sunday night's 68-58 loss to the Red Ravens in the Region VI Tournament semifinals.

Coffeyville will face Seward County in today's 8 p.m. final at Koch Arena.

"There's only one team that can win this thing, and as a coach you do everything you can and hope at the end you'll get hot," Hutchinson coach Steve Eck said. "That's not us this year. But that's basketball. That's sports."

It was hard for the Blue Dragons to hide their disappointment after Sunday's loss, the end of a season that saw them start 17-0 and rise to No. 1 in the national rankings, suffer through a midseason slide and then regroup in time to win six straight going into the semifinals.

"I think we played as well as we could, we just didn't have enough in the end," Hutchinson forward Robert Goff said. "We just fell short... it's hard to deal with."

Coffeyville guard Kevin Broussard made big shot after big shot for the Red Ravens, who finished second in Region VI last season, and finished with a game-high 22 points, five. With just more than five minutes to play and Hutchinson within one point at 54-53, Broussard hit a three-pointer and then a schoolyard-move layup on back-to-back possessions to push the lead to 59-53.

The Blue Dragons never got within four again.

On Broussard's layup, he drove the lane from the left side and flashed the ball to the defender with his right hand, got him to bite and brought it back to the left for the finish.

"That's something you only do if you're really feeling it," Broussard said, smiling. "And tonight I was, which was good because I didn't think I played very good the night before. It'll be hard to sleep tonight."

Hutchinson guard Joe Mitchell led his team with 19 points and five assists, but went without a basket in the first half when backcourt mates Dylan Frantz and Mark Braden battled foul trouble.

"I just wasn't taking what the defense was giving me to begin with, I needed to attack more," Mitchell said. "It's sad to see the season end like this. We came up short."

Eck is without a Region VI title in seven seasons as a Jayhawk Conference coach at Butler, Cowley and Hutchinson.

"It's not like I've been in this league my whole life," Eck said. "Give Coffeyville some credit. They've got a really nice team. That's going to be a great game between them and Seward tomorrow."
