Defense lifts Emporia State to win over Fort Hays

The Emporia State defense held Fort Hays State without a touchdown on the way to a 19-6 win on Saturday at Emporia.

The Hornets improved to 4-1, their best start since 2002.

Fort Hays entered the game undefeated and averaging 41.3 points per game. The Tigers also had the top quarterback in the MIAA in Mike Garrison, who finished 16 of 33 for 148 yards and two interceptions.

Emporia State scored first on a 1-yard touchdown run from Kevin Smart at the end of the first quarter for a 6-0 lead and were ahead 12-6 headed into the fourth quarter thanks to a pair of field goals from Zackary King.

The Hornets added their final score on the first possession of the fourth quarter when quarterback Tyler Eckenrode found Shjuan Richardson for a 67-yard touchdown pass and a 19-6 lead.

Nathan Linsey led the ESU defense with eight tackles, including three for loss and a pass breakup.
