Steven leads Jets to victory

Newman men's basketball coach Mark Potter wasn't sure how much junior guard Chip Steven would play Thursday night against Oklahoma Panhandle State, but he figured a little bit of Steven would be better than nothing.

Steven, however, had a different plan, scoring 16 points and grabbing seven rebounds to lead Newman to a 97-62 victory after missing two games with an ankle injury.

"We weren't sure how many minutes he'd play, but I went ahead and started him and he played really well," Potter said. "It's nice to have him back, obviously."

More importantly, the victory kept the Jets alive for the coveted No. 2 seed in the Heartland Conference Tournament with one regular-season game left.

Right now, Newman (17-9, 10-5 Heartland) is in a three-way tie for second with St. Mary's and Dallas Baptist.

The Jets must beat Texas Permian-Basin at home on Saturday then hope for a Dallas Baptist home loss to conference champion Incarnate Word later that day to take second and receive a first-round playoff bye.

Third place means Newman would play again on Thursday.

"We know what we can control and what we can take care of and we're focused on that," Potter said.

Jake Darby added 14 points and five assists for the Jets, including hitting 4 of 7 three-pointers. Keaton Schultz scored 14 points for Newman.

Saturday's Newman men's game against Permian Basin tips off at 3 p.m.
