Friends rolls into semis

Chris Jackson scored 19 points to lead five Friends players in double figures on the way to a 79-62 victory over visiting Bethel in the KCAC Tournament quarterfinals Thursday.

The Falcons, the tournament's top seed and regular-season KCAC champion, have already guaranteed a berth in the NAIA Division II Tournament and will host No. 6 seed Southwestern — 72-62 winners over No. 5 Kansas Wesleyan — on Saturday in the semifinals.

Avery Richardson added 13 points and four assists for Friends, while Romar Jones had 11 points and four assists. Chris Heard (13) and Mike Hyde (12) were the other Falcons in double figures.

Trey Ronnenbaum and Eric Regier led Bethel with 19 points apiece.

Saint Mary 64, McPherson 62 — Saint Mary pulled off the first big upset of the tournament, taking down No. 2 seed McPherson on the road behind 20 points from Eric Avant.

Marlon Dominique and Charles Moore led the Bulldogs with 11 points apiece.

The Bulldogs can now only qualify for the national tournament if top-seeded Friends wins the tournament — the second automatic berth to the KCAC goes to either the tournament champion or the next-highest seed after Friends.

Saint Mary will travel to Bethany in the other men's semifinal, also Saturday.

Bethany 85, Sterling 70 — Third-seeded Bethany kept its national tournament hopes alive behind Clayton Goggins' 14 points. Senior guard C.J. Littlejohn added 13 points and five assists.

Zach Goodrich led Sterling with 17 points.
